My Students
My students come from a very diverse background. Some are from military families, constantly on the move every few years and trying to find some semblance of stability and make their way through a new situation. Some students come from low income housing and they are trying to be the first from their family to go to and graduate college. Others are just new to this country and trying to learn a new language and culture.
Regardless, we're like a family here, always supportive of each other and pushing each other to be more.
We see our diversity as a strength because that means we all have something different to contribute and we all have something we can learn from each other. My students all have different challenges but they're all striving for the same goals, an education and the bright future it affords.
My Project
Last year during the pandemic my fellow teachers and I realized that we need a way to help keep our students engaged so they would want to attend classes with us but also give them resources so they can learn at their own pace. So we started scripting and filming different videos. Sometimes we did a rap, silly videos to help them understand math concepts, or just film our lessons.
Our videos were instant hit with our kids and fellow teachers.
The kids would come to class asking us when we will release our next video and they also told us how much they appreciated having the chance to watch the videos and learn at their own pace at home. Some of the teachers at our school would use the video in their own lesson. We even got mentioned in the local news.
A lot of things about this upcoming school year are unknown but my co-teacher and I hope to continue making videos for our students, new ones and improving some of our old ones. We think they really help our students feel welcome in the class and engage with the math concepts. We're hoping to get a faster computer to accomplish this because our current computer is slowing down and we will also want to try new things by using new and better software.
