Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
67 different cultures are represented where all are present. Most of the students are at-risk, but because of these challenges, they are very accepting and caring of others. Our students are friendly, shy, outgoing, and super sweet. The high school is one of the larger high schools in the state, but sometimes, we lack funding for new novels. Overall, I work at a high school where teachers truly care for their students and often times use money out of their own pockets for resources, including me.
In addition, because our school is so diverse, often times students aren't able to have books that represent them.
My Project
Every start to the new school year, I try to buy new books, so students will buy into to reading. Some students are relunctant readers; others love to read. Every year there are new titles and new students, and their likes and dislikes sometime change.
These books will bring excitement and interest.
For example, "Shout" is one such book. Our school librarian has chosen this books as a good read, so kids will want to check it out. If you haven't read this book, you should. I laughed, cried, and saw a little bit of myself in this book; you will too. Students need to see themselves in the books I have; they directly feel accepted and validated.
