Our district has adopted the science of reading which means my classroom needs an update! My students are in need of hands-on materials to help them learn how to decode and encode words, as well as build their phonemic and phonological awareness. These interactive resources will make learning how to read more fun for many of my first graders.
For many of my students, they know that reading is hard for them, and it makes them feel anxious when trying these new strategies.
My hope is that these materials will make learning how to read feel less stressful since they will be able to manipulate the materials. We use the whiteboard dots to write on the tables and I have pencils, highlighters and notecards at my reading area when reading decodable texts.
My first graders are amazing kids that come from difficult home situations and with home life being stressful enough, my goal is to make learning fun and engaging. They deserve to love school and feel safe enough to try hard things!
