My students need new reading materials that they can relate to. While my classroom has a variety of reading options already in the classroom, adding new novels tends to get students motivated to read.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in a low-income alternative school setting in a rural setting in North Carolina. 95% of the students at my school receive free lunch. Many of these students have been deemed at-risk due to their social-emotional deficiencies or due to their home environments. As an educator, my role is to try to shed some light on their journey and attempt to provide some interventions to ensure student success. I have found that relationship building has made a huge impact on my success with these at-risk students and their families.
My Project
Having high interest novel options is really important in the English classroom when attempting to implement independent reading and/or desiring students to look at your book shelf in general. Unfortunately, my school does not have a librarian, so it is up to the classroom teachers to get students excited about reading. For this project, I have searched Amazon related to various topics that I have talked to my students about in an attempt to add to the classroom library collection. I think it is important to have a variety of new books to introduce to students to show them that you are genuinely interested in their reading experience in the classroom.
