My Students
Our school is located in Harlem and serves a predominantly African American and Hispanic population. Although most of our students enter first grade reading far below grade level, they usually make great strides in reading progress with a whole school literacy focus.
I teach at a Title I-funded school in NYC where 100% of our children receive free breakfast and lunch.
Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn. Many of them want to be the first in their families to go to college.
My Project
The books obtained through this project will be used in my classroom to enhanced the students reading and comprehension skills. The books will be used for small groups instructions and guided reading. The children will also be allowed to select their favorite books from the library to read during independent reading time. The majority of my students have been out of the classroom for eighteen months therefore their reading and writing skills are far below grade level. These books will be beneficial to my students as they struggle to improve their reading skills.
