My students need new cabinets to help them be better organized and better able to focus. This greatly helps their academic performance. My old cabinets are falling apart and need replaced. See picture of old cabinet.
I have a class of about 18 first grade students (numbers fluctuate). Many come from less than perfect situations, but we don't allow circumstances to determine who we will be. They work hard at learning, and we have fun doing it. Our school has a very high free/reduced lunch rate (over 80%). There are many challenges with attention. I expect my students to learn, and they accept the challenge. One of our favorite expressions is, "We can do hard things!"
To help them be better organized and limit distractions, I turn their desks around so that the openings are away from them.
This works very well! For the past three years, I have used inexpensive dollar store cabinets at their“tables” to keep book boxes with library books, the few text books they use, and white boards. All of their tools are kept in a pencil box on their desk. With so many students struggling to stay focused nowadays, this helps tremendously.
My problem is that these cabinets are not holding up well and will not last another year. I would love to replace them with much nicer cabinets that are much more sturdy. Pictures attached of old and new cabinets.
My Project
I have a fairly transient population, and a high free/reduced lunch rate (about 80%). Many of the students have difficulty with organization and focus. The cabinets I have been using to store their books and supplies are falling apart. I hope to replace them with more sturdy cabinets that will last longer.
By using these cabinets, and turning their desks around so the opening is away from them, their organization and focus is increased.
At the same time, distractions are decreased. This has a big impact on their academic success. These new cabinets will be greatly appreciated and used wisely.
