New Bookshelves for PIES Library

Help me give my students sturdy bookshelves that will provide more space for ease of access to books and display shelves and labels that will highlight books with diverse voices.

My Project

The PIES Library has always been a multi-purpose space for the school community. Lately, the library has been transforming into a Learning Commons where students can access not only books, but also listen to visiting authors, engage in coding and robotics, and more. In the past two years, we have been so fortunate to have have received a tremendous amount of STEAM materials, but now it is time to refresh our hardscapes in the space. Our bookcases have been very dependable for many years, but the shelves are starting to bow and show signs of their age. This project comes at a perfect time because students and library staff have been focused on weeding from the collection and we have received many grants and gifts of books over the course of the past year that deserve highlighting on new furniture.

Our students deserve to have their updated, inclusive collection showcased in an inviting and flexible learning environment.

We are trying to focus on making the library space more adaptable so in addition to traditional, bolted shelving, we are looking to purchase some shelves on wheels to open the space when projects and presentations require it. All the shelves will help the collection have more space for front facing books and bins making our updated collection more accessible and enticing to students. We are also hoping to promote social equity by purchasing tall, spinning display shelves for books that highlight different diverse voices. We have also included stickers in this request for the spines of these books. This way there are easy, visual cues for students who are interested in finding books that act as windows or mirrors into the lives of people who represent diverse backgrounds.
