Our school is a Title I school located in a lower-socioeconomic (high poverty) area in Salem, OR. Many of our students come from bilingual households where their first language is Spanish. Also, many have experienced trauma, abuse, neglect, and far more adverse childhood experiences than any person should.
Your generous donations and support will help us facilitate a rich reading intervention time for our 5th grade students.
These students come hungry to learn everyday and deserve the resources needed to continue their educational journey.
My Project
As a Bilingual Instructional Assistant, one of my main roles is to lead reading intervention groups. This year my 5th grade reading group is doing a 'book study', where we read different chapter books and discuss vocabulary and comprehension.
When it came time to choose a book, I realized our options were very limited.
There were only 5-6 copies of several outdated, old books. Alongside the other Instructional Assistants, we decided the students NEED new book series' to really engage during our reading groups. Our 5th graders are amazing and LOVE to read. These books will help our students grow in vocabulary, comprehension, and fall more in love with reading everyday. Thanks for your generosity!
