Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are incredible. They are second graders who come from a variety of cultural, linguistic, and socio-economic backgrounds. They love to play, read, learn, and make each other (and their teacher) laugh every day! They bring enthusiasm and creativity to the classroom, often in spite of the anxiety that comes with an emotionally stressful life.
These kids have ambitious goals for their futures, but they have to work extra hard to get there.
In addition to working through considerable social and emotional stress, they are striving to learn all of their elementary content as well as the English language. Still, they never cease to amaze me with the growth they are able to make. I feel incredibly lucky to work with and learn from these kids and am constantly inspired by their determination.
My Project
As second graders, my students love to play and learn and are eager to prove their independence! For students like mine who are often dealing with emotional stress and extra responsibilities at home, it is especially important for them to have fun while learning at school as well as feel successful.
The variety of books would be used as both read-alouds and independent reading materials for students and were carefully selected based on the authors' lessons.
These books would teach the kids about showing kindness, managing feelings, resolving conflicts, taking risks, making mistakes, and taking pride in their culture and home language. These lessons are critical to building kids' confidence so that they can become courageous and independent both in and outside of school! Along with the books, there are poetry, writing, and math activities to serve a similar purpose.
Simple struggles such as not knowing what to do next or how to spell a word can derail a student's concentration and cause anxiety throughout the day. The books, plus student dictionaries and math games will solve this problem! The student dictionaries allow students to write with more fluency and collect their own "tricky" words to use in writing, and the math activities will be either review or challenge work for students who finish early or need more to do. All of this will surely help my second graders build confidence and have fun this school year!
