My students are from an area that has faced major financial hardships. It is a rural area with limited employment options for parents. Over ninety percent of our student population is considered below poverty level. Many of these students will never get the opportunity to experience different cultures, educational trips or the vast possibilities with regards to their future.
I teach students in grades K-5.
They have had to face hardships from an early age. The neighborhood and city have been on a steady decline for many years.
My Project
This project will help us add to our school library a variety of books that the budget has limited in the past. Many of the books requested are favorites of the students that have been damaged or gone missing in recent years. I have been unable to replace them. The ability to check out books that are of interest to students is what helps to bolster a love of reading. Audiobooks are especially helpful to struggling students, they are able to listen and follow along.
Instilling a LOVE of reading and books help to create a pathway to future reading.
Reading is the foundation for all education. I also picked out books to promote coding and other diversity centered books.
