My students need an array of materials for our new art therapy group. We have a focus on drawing & painting, and are starting out with some of the basics, plus a couple of unique mediums!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing, inspiring and dedicated to social change to making their world a better place. They are also high school students ages 14-20 from low-income areas around New York City in every borough. Our school is a transfer school, which means some of our students have had problems in other school settings and/or problems at home that led to falling behind in school, and have needed to change schools for one reason or another. Some students are lacking emotional support within their family systems, communities, or peer groups. For a majority of our students, these groups are the first time they are accessing counseling support. High school students may deal with multiple issues including but not limited to community violence, mental health issues, racism, classism, language barriers, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, unintended pregnancies, self-injury, eating disorders, etc. Our students have incredible insight and do amazing, awe-inspiring soulful work in the context of our groups.
My Project
All of these materials have been specially requested by our students, who love to paint and draw and want to increase their skills. The watercolors, watercolor paper, drawing paper and charcoal pencils are materials that we don't have, and it would make a huge difference in our group! The scratch paper and clay are awesome therapeutic additions.
The group aids in decreasing anxiety and increasing self-esteem.
This art therapy group takes place after school on Fridays, and it's a space for students to decompress at the end the week, to make new friends and to develop relationships with the school counselors. Some teenagers feel more comfortable expressing themselves through art, and we feel it's important to make that available to them.
