Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach English/Language Arts to an incredible group of hard-working, spirited 7th graders in Long Island City, Queens.
Many of my students are reluctant readers, and claim to hate reading, because it's 'boring'.
I know the truth, which is that they just haven't found the right book for them yet.
My favorite part of my job is finding the books that do click for the kids and make them want to keep reading, even after I've asked them to put books away.
My Project
Getting students to read in middle school can be a struggle. But once in a while a book comes around that every 7th grader, regardless of reading level, background or gender, wants to read, and I can hardly keep it on my shelves. That was the story with "The Hate U Give," Angie Thomas's award-winning and powerful narrative about a teenage drawn to a life of activism after she witnesses the police shooting of a childhood friend.
My students have been waiting eagerly to read Angie Thomas's second book, "On the Come Up."
I just finished it last week, and I can attest that I think it's even better than her first book. Unfortunately the book is so new that it's not available from the DOE, and local libraries have a limited number of copies. I want to get these books into the hands of my students as soon as possible, to keep their motivation for reading as high as possible. Your donation would help me to buy 12 copies of "On the Come Up" to share with over 90-100 7th graders.
