New and Improved Classroom Library to Foster Love of Reading

Help me give my students a classroom library with current books that may pique their interest. My goal is to help each student discover that they are a reader, which is why there are a variety of texts.

My Students

My students are from an extremely rural area and many of them do not have access to the internet from home. We do not live in a very diverse area, and many of them have never heard of refugee camps or project housing but will formulate opinions based on what they hear from their parents. I have found my role in the classroom to be one of utmost importance because I want them to visit new worlds and understand new perspectives when reading.

Many of my students ask thought-provoking questions that I could never plan for before class and they end up having extraordinarily open minds.

Through the avenue of reading, I try to get students to formulate their own opinions, to navigate and interpret the crazy world that is the internet, and to become more active citizens. Every year, I am impressed by how much trust the students put in me in helping them to navigate this unknown territory, and they always surprise me by the amount of growth that they show.

My Project

This year, my main focus is to help students recognize that they can love reading by guiding them to find the books that they enjoy. In order to accomplish this, I need to update and improve the offerings of my classroom library (our school library lacks current choices as well). After surveying the interests of students that I will have next year and after asking a variety of people about their recommended reads, I have created this list of books as a starting point.

Research shows that the more that students read and discuss what they are reading, the more successful they will be in life.

I think that classics are important as mentor texts, but many students are pushing aside their reading and merely skimming in order to "complete" assignments because it is assigned. This is not preparing them for the literacy skills that they will ultimately need.

Therefore, I think that by incorporating student input on the reading selection and conferencing regularly, I will be able to hold students accountable for actually reading. Students will be given class time to browse and switch out books depending on their interest. I plan to keep track of the popular books and to conference with students regularly to help them pick and choose what they may want to read next. Please help me to foster a love of reading for ALL students!
