Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school serves K-8 students from immigrant and refugee families during their first 2 years in the United States. Students come to my school with a wide range of cultural and educational backgrounds. For some of my first graders, this year will be their first time ever attending a school.

My students' English language skills are key to their future success.

Students are granted a two year enrollment period at my school before moving on to another school in the district. Some students apply to magnet schools dedicated to international studies, while others choose to attend their designated neighborhood schools. It is pertinent that I help my students make significant gains in their English proficiency before they graduate from my school's program.

My Project

My students will use each one of these materials on a daily basis to improve their literacy skills and enrich their school experience.

Giving my students a variety of opportunities to practice their English skills will help them to excel in my classroom and far beyond in the future.

I selected the carpet because it could serve as a tool to teach students the letters of the alphabet and vocabulary words that coincide with each letter. The colored rows on the carpet will also help students learn the names each color in English. Dry erase boards and markers can be used to practice writing letters, words, sentences, and much, much more! The easel will help me to review letters and letter sounds, guide students through the writing process, and facilitate class compilations of English vocabulary words. Overall, the supplies I selected will provide a multitude of English language practice opportunities for my first grade students.
