My wonderful kindergarteners are between the ages of 5 and 7. For many of them, this is the first time they have entered a classroom, picked up a book, or explored music, art, and the sciences. They come to school with smiles on their faces and an eagerness to learn, but they also come from very different backgrounds.
Many of my students live in poverty, many are learning English as a second language, and many are immigrants and refugees from other countries.
Even so, my students come to school willing to take chances and grow while teaching their teacher a thing or two about how to better meet the needs of her students. They also show her how to view each day with open eyes and an open mind.
My Project
My students love to listen to a story being read to them. They will sit gleefully as I read to them exciting books about fall, Pete the Cat, and other coveted kindergarten characters. As much as I would love to read to my students numerous times a day, our busy schedule does not allow for more than 1 or 2 daily read alouds.
These MP3 players, headphones, and cases will allow all of my students to be read to as many times a day as they would like.
These MP3 players will be used in many different ways. Students can choose to listen to a story be read aloud when they are finished their work or they can be placed at a listening center so that a group of students can listen to a story be read aloud and then they can draw their favorite part of the story. Students can choose to listen to a story we have in our classroom library and read along with the book or students can choose to listen to a book we do not have in the library and try to picture the images inside of their head using their imaginations. A group of students can read the same book and then have a book discussion. The opportunities and adventures using these MP3 players are endless and will bring reading to a whole other level for my students.
