Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Just because our students' background experiences may be limited, our classroom experiences should be limitless!
Our TK students are beautifully diverse, both ethnically, socioeconomically, and in life experiences.
We are the only transitional kindergarten class at our Title I school (which means the majority of our school population qualifies for free or reduced-rate lunch). For many of our TK students, this year is their very first school experience as many have not been able to take advantage of a preschool program.
My Project
Our transitional kindergarteners are now convinced they are scientists after their comprehensive study of steelhead trout habitat and life cycle. Our science exploration station needs a "buggy" update. We are hoping to fill it with supplies for our budding entomologists to observe insects. By adding tactile letters and rubbing materials related to insects and habitats, students will have more incentive to spend time at the science exploration station. Consequently, they will have even more opportunities to use their oral language and practice identifying the sounds they hear in the scientific vocabulary they'll be practicing.
The addition of these supplies will ensure a connection between science and literacy that will address our students' curiosity about insects while reinforcing their growing literacy skills.
We hope an updated version of our science exploration station will continue to nurture our young students' view of themselves as real scientists!
