Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Matzke Elementary is a school in which students come from many different backgrounds and learning experiences. Our school wide goal is for all students to become better writers and readers. Whether it is drawing pictures, writing the alphabet, writing a string of letters, or writing simple words or sentences, it begins in Kindergarten. Since not all Kindergartners enter on the same academic level, teachers need to have a variety of prewriting and emergent writing activities to cater to their individual needs. Students need to be able to convey their thoughts, ideas, and experiences through writing. Providing a variety of multi-leveled writing opportunities will allow students to use their thinking skills, make decisions, express their creativity and help in other areas of the curriculum. As students continue to master their writing skills it leads them to become good communicators, better readers and to successfully work independently. Bea Johnson's book titled, "Never Too Early To Write," states that in order to have a truly effective writing program, students need writing opportunities everyday. Using magnetic boards and letters will allow students to create simple words, whether it's sight words, rhyming words, or words within the classroom. Using wipe off boards and markers on a daily basis will promote writing skills as well. Students will have opportunities to write around the room, make lists, copy sentences, and write on their own. Creating a variety of writing opportunities in the Writing Center will also promote writing skills. Having multi-leveled writing opportunities will cater to each students individual writing and reading readiness. The potential impact on participating students is as follows: *Children who write first will read earlier because writing provides practice using word forms and sentence patterns. * Good writing skills promote and enhance communication skills. They learn to communicate more effectively and rapidly. *Writing encourages responsible decision-making. When children are allowed to decide on topics of their choice, writing becomes non-threatening which leads to better writing experiences. *Writing enhances self-esteem. Children who begin writing at their own developmentally appropriate level have a sense of accomplishment because their writing is within their own capabilities. *Most important, writing leads to creativity. Allowing children to write provides them the opportunity to express their individual creativity.
