My students are EAST students, and their main goal is to find problems within our community and come up with solutions. They have recently been doing research on dementia, and they want to make Twiddle Blankets for those in the hospitals or nursing homes who suffer from this disease.
People living with Alzheimer’s or dementia commonly experience daily anxiety in the early evening.
Sensory activity blankets—with sewn-on zippers, buttons, and beads for people to manipulate—help people release that nervous tension and anxiety by giving them something to do with their hands. My students are requesting sewing machines so they can create their own Twiddle blankets from start to finish, sewing the material together and adding the fidgets. They will then distribute these blankets to local nursing homes and hospitals. This community service outreach will reach many people who will greatly benefit from these blankets.
The students working on this project will be learning many important life skills. They will be learning the importance of community service and helping others, as well as design aspects and communication. They are very excited about the opportunity to receive the items they need to create these blankets, as well as the opportunity to help those in their community.
My goals for the students that will carry out this project are simple: I want them to demonstrate confidence in their own abilities to meet the challenges of the 21st century and to develop solutions to community-based problems. I feel as if this project they have created will help them reach both of those goals.
