Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the amazement you felt the first time you entered a library or a bookstore? I want my students to feel that same sense of excitement through the online world of books!
Although we are a magnet school, 53% of our students are from low-socioeconomic homes.
Parents send their children to our school for a better opportunity. Although we are a magnet school, we receive virtually no additional funding beyond that received by any other public school. Although we are a magnet school, only 17% of our students are in the Gifted and Talented program, yet our school still has high test scores. Our students are eager to learn and take pride in their work. I also have 8 English learners.
My Project
Using these 2 netbooks, my class of 34, especially my 5 English learners, will be able to access the interactive component of our reading program. They can read the weekly stories or have the stories read to them. They can take notes and highlight in the virtual story anthology. They can also use the Amazon Kindle online book reader to download and read many classics by authors such as Mark Twain and L. Frank Baum for free. Finally, they will be able to play online educational games through websites such as Starfall.com and PBSkids.
These 2 netbooks are the equivalent of a library full of books.
I want my students to have every opportunity possible to be successful in the 21st century. These netbooks will help ensure my students are college-bound and career-ready.
More than half of students from low‑income households
