The spring's MySAEBRs, ICCSD's social-emotional screener, results indicated that 25% of the district's junior high students were potentially at risk for social-emotional concerns. With youth anxiety and depression on the rise, students need a safe place to prioritize mental health while at school. The NESTT is a safe space where students can receive social-emotional support and skill development.
CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) reports a 24% decrease in student distress and an 11% increase in academic achievement when schools focus on social-emotional learning.
The NESTT allows for students to get assistance with strong emotions they may be experiencing, learn de-escalation and mindfulness strategies, and return to class in a state that allows for learning.
My Project
Mental health impacts a student's ability to learn. With the pandemic, we saw an increase in students experiencing anxiety and depression. As a result, there was a significant rise in need of mental health supports offered to students during the school day. The NESTT will provide a safe space for students to report and receive mental health support and learn skills and strategies to help deescalate strong emotions. The mindfulness tools and other resources being requested would allow for students to return to class in a better state for learning, and also be able to apply strategies in future moments of distress. These skills will not only positively impact student academic achievement, but the quality of life.
The items being requested allow for us to create a welcoming space, as well as help manage symptoms of anxiety and depression such as restlessness, shortness of breath, excessive worry or fear, or somatic symptoms.
The fidget toys, mindfulness tools, and other items listed will partner with the Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) that will be provided through the trained staff working in The NESTT. DBT focuses on mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation. iPads will be used to allow students to utilize calming and mindfulness apps. The Chromebook will be used to collect data and feedback from students to better format interventions. The refrigerator will be used to keep cooling packs cold, which aids in reducing anxiety.
