My Students
I accepted a position at this school before Covid hit. Then, when I began expecting the 2020 school year to begin, the announcement hit that we were going fully virtual. Even though these kids never met me in person, they embraced me.
Now, this 2021-22 school year, we're in person, wearing masks, trying to get back to normal, and everyone is struggling.
Mentally, emotionally, physically... we're tired.
My students are fourteen to eighteen years old, and attend high school at an urban, Title I school. All of our students receive free or reduced price lunch, and over a third of students are identified as an exceptional education population. Despite all this, hungry and lacking, they show up and give their hearts.
My Project
We all know how hard it is to focus when you're hungry or don't have other needs met. What if this was your daily life? I have students who eat one meal a day.
I know they need to feel safe, full, and secure before anything I teach them takes root.
I can't do this alone and need financial help.
My wish is for my classroom to be one of their safe spots where they can tell me their needs, get them met, and then absorb knowledge the rest of the day.
I asked for food and basic care supplies that kids can access whenever they need. They won't need to ask, they can just come and grab. There will be no shame, just access.
