Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a very low income community with high income communities close by. About 95% of the students are on free or reduced-price lunch. More than 75% are English Language Learners. Most (80%) are Hispanic with some Pacific Islanders and African Americans.
Our academic scores are very low compared to districts around us and the nation.
Many parents have 2 jobs to pay the bills. About 40% of the community is homeless. Many live in homes or apartments with other families.
My Project
I love singing and starting the class with some type of music to build community in my class. By having music incorporated through out the day it helps my 2nd graders stay engaged, relaxed, and happy. It allows them to share and work as a team. I notice my students are much calmer when music is involved and when they can sing along with each other. We will play and sing songs that ties right into what they are learning about.
Please help me give my students a keyboard piano along with some music books to help them learn different music so they can play and sing together so we can build community in our class.
