Our students are very diverse. The majority of students are second language learners and are mostly Hispanic, Pacific Islanders, African Americans and others. Families are proud of their cultures. 40% are homeless and the majority are low income receiving free lunch and breakfast. Our students are eager to learn and work hard. The parents are involved and hopeful for good educations for their children. Our students score low on the state tests but continue to work hard to improve. As a Reading Recovery teacher, I teach reading to struggling readers in first and second grade. I teach individuals and small groups of students to bring them up to grade level. Unfortunately, many students are below grade level in reading and writing. It's imperative to have this strong intervention program for students to move up in reading and writing and move closer to grade level.
