Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a group of diverse, middle school, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. We are at a Title l school. Most of my students come from a low socioeconomic background. I strive to have my classroom accessible and equitable, but that becomes a challenge when resources are limited.
My students are current and future scientists who are excited to learn about the world around them through curiosity, observation, data collection, and application.
My students are all eager to learn and make self-discoveries in science. They come to school knowing that it's a safe place where they can create meaningful connections with their peers and teachers. They come with little to no background knowledge of the science content, but they are willing and strive to soak up all the knowledge that is presented to them. My students are wonderful young men and women who are ready to take on the world.
My Project
Many of my students come into the classroom without a device. Due to these unprecedented times, it is best for students to submit their work and engage in lessons digitally. Some students have devices of their own, such as smartphones, which they bring to class. Often times, their own devices are not powerful enough to complete simple tasks, such as taking pictures to turn in an assignment or participate in a class review game. Currently, I have four iPads available for students to use in the classroom if they do not have their own. However, these four iPads are borrowed from another teacher and we would love to have our own small class set specifically to be used in our science classroom.
Help get us one more iPad so that we can help more students access the digital tools used in school and in their classes to become successful.
We utilize many digital tools in the classroom to engage students in their learning and are in need of more devices so that these digital tools are accessible to all students. We have used Ebooks instead of physical textbooks, which has been a great success. Recently, I have implemented online review games for students to master content. Many times, I will have a handful of students who cannot participate in these games because they lack a device or the device they own is not reliable. Our school utilizes Microsoft TEAMs for distance learning and in the building learning. Sometimes, students' own devices are not powerful enough to run this program. With the iPad, we will be able to teach and reteach students to effectively use TEAMs to be successful in all their classes.
