Mr. LaPierre from Irvington NJ is requesting classroom basics through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need pencils and a pencil sharpener. To demonstrate learning, students need to write. Each day I provide pencils for my students.

I work in Irvington, NJ which is an urban area. My students are young children ranging from seven to ten years of age. The children do not have basic supplies, such as pencils and notebooks. Many students are new to our country and are just learning about our culture and language. Many students come from single parent homes.
In our school we are fortunate to provide students with free breakfast in the classroom, free lunch, and free after school fresh fruit or vegetables.
Additionally, we have a free dinner program after school. Our students are amazing children that do have a lot of needs. We work hard every day to meet the needs of our children.
Everyday students are writing in class to demonstrate mastery of various subjects and topics. Students do not come to class with pencils. As a teacher I provide students with pencils every single day. However, each week I go through at least 2 dozen pencils.
This basic item is getting difficult to provide to students.
Most people take this for granted. Most people imagine all students come to school with the most basic supplies, such as a pencil. However, the majority of the students do not even bring a pencil to school. School supplies should not be an obstacle for students to overcome. Therefore, I give out pencils each and every day of school. As the year goes on I run out of supplies and I must continue to purchase pencils.
Please help to provide this basic item to my students.
