Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If you have played an instrument before, you know the cost associated with doing so. We were fortunate to win a grant and received 30 band instruments to begin our band program at our school. Out of 30 instruments, 4 are percussion. Please help build our percussion section!

We are a k-8 school in a inner city district in CT.

Our student population is around 500 students, with 200 students in the middle school. We have a high level of poverty with close to 90% of our students receiving reduced or free lunch. Our students are fun loving and enjoy learning and working in and around our community. In the past 3 years that I have been here, the music department has grown in many ways, with the development of school wide talent shows, community service opportunities, performance opportunities, and the creation of the school band. Most of this growth would not have occurred without the special people in our lives who have donated a great deal to us.

My Project

In August, our school was awarded a grant to give 30 woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments to the school, along with a part time instructor, to begin a band program. We began the program in the end of August and have had much success in beginning performance. Our students have taken to their instruments with such enthusiasm! What a feeling to hear moaning and groaning when the class is over as opposed to when it first begins! However, our drumming students have only 4 percussion instruments to work with. With the more challenging compositions we are able to play, having the percussion instruments to meet the challenge would be fantastic. Students will gain exposure to the suspended cymbal, in turn helping aid understanding of a drum set. The snare stand is important as well, as we have one stand for both the snare drum and bell kit. I would love to use both at the same time!

With our fundraising items, we are able to help our percussion students with the minimal sticks, mallets, and inexpensive Latin percussion.

With your help, we can help grow our percussion section one major instrument at a time. In turn, we can grow the number of student participating in the band's percussion section, helping one more student express their love of music!
