This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is a regular education, inclusive classroom. I am located in Danbury, Connecticut, an urban Title I District which qualifies as a free lunch school. My class is composed of 25-27 students who have a wide range of level and ability, with significant ESL and low-performing populations. Many of my students are learning spoken and written English and need books on their level to help them practice. Some student have difficulty finding time to dedicate to reading at home. A collection of just right books in the classroom is crucial for their reading growth.

My Project

As I teach in a fully inclusive classroom, in a diverse school, I have a large population of ELL and low performing readers. Next year, I anticipate at least a third of my class will be reading two or more years below grade level. My classroom library ranges from a third grade to fifth grade level. I struggle to find authentic literature for the third of my class who cannot read at these levels yet. Independent practice is crucial for reading growth and my students need books they can interact with in meaningful ways. I am working to create a collection of good books for them to read during their independent reading time.
