This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My mid-level readers hunger for meaty chapter books, yet few are at their vocabulary and comprehension level. Mercy Watson books, however, are perfect! Plus, my students love to read about Mercy the pig's hilarious adventures.

Few of my second grade students have books at home, and few came to me reading anywhere near grade level.

We have worked really hard during the first half of the year and most students are well on their way to achieving grade level reading and reading success by the end of the year. One thing they continue to need, however, is texts that are at their level, yet intriguing and engaging. After reading a few hundred "decodable" readers, they really want to try out their skills on "real" stories and chapter books. The Mercy the pig stories are just perfect! They include wonderful pictures along with text that is just a bit challenging, and adventures that make my students laugh. Because they love reading about Mercy, they work really hard to decode and understand the stories.

My Project

My students will use the requested books in small group activities, both in centers and with teacher guidance, and for practicing oral fluency, comprehension, and increasing vocabulary. These books spark my students' imagination and, thus, help with writing activities as well. Additionally, students will use these books to read individually. Not only will my 19 students this year use these books, but all of my students for years to come will have access to them.

These darling and engaging books will hold my students' attention and keep them reading.

Mercy Watson is an amazing pig who goes on interesting adventures. They will be so proud to be reading "chapter" books!
