My students are very diverse and come from all different walks of life. They eat different foods, they don't celebrate the same holidays, they come from different backgrounds and economic statuses, but they are so caring and open-minded. They give me such high hopes for this generation. They are challenged every day in my classroom, and they love it! They love learning. They love reading.
While some of us may not be well-traveled and maybe not have gone outside of our neighborhood, we can go anywhere in a book!
One of the many things that I have in common with my class is our love for children's literature. As this is my second year of teaching, I don't have as many children's books as I would like. I love incorporating literature in a variety of subjects. We are also in need of more technology. With children being way more tech savvy than we ever were, it's important to adapt to the way that they like to learn. They love tablets and laptops because, with all the educational programs on them, it makes learning so much more fun.
This may seem like an unusual request but we desperately need a printer for our classroom. Last month, we were notified that we could only use the school's copy machine to print and/or copy a maximum number of 100 pages a month. I have 21 students. I send home weekly newsletters, monthly calendars, assessments, homework, extra work when needed, field trip forms, make copies for subs, print reports, print books, and so much more. If you do the math, you will see that 100 copies are just not enough.
You don't realize how much you need the copy machine until you no longer have the capability of using it.
While the upper grades are able to send many assignments online, it's very different for first grade. These students still need to write with pencil and paper as they are still working on handwriting. During the past month, we've had to be creative with our assessments and assignments. We haven't been able to send hard copies of things home and not all parents have access to the internet.
It's been very difficult to manage with the copies being limited to 100 pages a month. It's very frustrating because I want my students to have the best, and I value education so when resources are limited to this extreme, it makes my already tough job even more difficult.
