I have the pleasure of working with a diverse group of students who have the desire to learn, although they face many challenges. This is a group of 52 students; 24 girls and 28 boys. The group consists of Asians, Caucasians, African Americans, and Hispanics. There are many learning levels and learning styles within the group.
All of the students come from low-income families.
Many are from single-parent households. Many of the families are dysfunctional. This results in students needing a great deal of emotional support from their teachers as well as, a safe and comfortable school environment. Because they live with social problems, learning becomes a lower priority for them. Still, they attend school seeking support.
The students are in a Dual Language Program, learning Spanish and English simultaneously. The school is located in the inner city. Funds to inner-city schools are limited and continue to be cut. With such cuts, school personnel are eliminated and resources are limited. Our district is low performing and it has been taken over the state. Through all the challenges, students must continue to learn; therefore, resources must be available to them. I have to provide what is needed.
My Project
As we implement distance learning, I have to deliver the instructions through a computer. I have encountered numerous complications while teaching my children online. The computer I am currently using, is slow and shuts down while I am delivering lessons and correcting the assignments. While hosting virtual meetings with my students, I am logged off, and have to set up new meetings for students to join. My students are getting frustrated and at times, do not return to the meetings. Students complain that they are not receiving their work back on time to correct them. They are also getting non-delivered messages when submitting their work. All these complications are hindering their learning and learning motivation is decreasing. Using a computer that it's more updated and works faster can solve many of the challenges we are currently facing during. Distance learning is new to us, and we are not able to make the best of it because of my uncooperative computer.
