My Students

What would life be like without music? Quiet, and for some students, would mean an unsuccessful education. It's been proven that a successful music program helps students in other subjects such as Math and English, adds to social skills and self confidence, and helps students learn independence.

Unfortunately, as resilient, talented, and persevering my students are, sometimes they don't get the help they need.

Coming from broken homes, low-income families, and in some cases, no home at all, these students need someone in their corner helping them along. The music program at our school has become a safe haven for students who find it difficult to understand and excel in basic subjects such as Math and Science. It's because of their ability to take part in a band that they are excited about coming to school everyday. A school not only has the responsibility of educating students, but also to make students enjoy being educated. Music is able to do just this for our students.

My Project

With a music program in place, instruments in students hands, and excited musicians waiting, there's a few essential elements that are missing from our program. Reeds are necessary to make these instruments produce a sound. Without them, an instrument is just a decoration. When given a reed, a student is able to not only learn to play an instrument, but also to read music, develop social skills playing in an ensemble, and build self confidence within themselves. Independence is also among some of the much needed life skills that are acquired from learning to play and care for an instrument. The neck straps will make it easier for the saxophones to hold their instruments while playing. Mallets and ligatures are important parts needed to make music with their instruments. The cleaner will help teach students responsibility. Overall... these students will create music and make memories that will last them their entire life.

Your generosity can be the deciding factor in whether or not these 5th grade students have a desire to come to school to learn and to play their instrument.

Not only will they gain many many skills, but more importantly, they will feel like they're a part of something special and that will carry them through the harder aspects of their lives that we cannot control. Let's band together and help these students succeed!
