My students need highlighters, pencils, markers, and other general school supplies for day to day activities within the classroom. These materials will be used in the creation of projects within our classroom.
My students take great pride in the work they do and projects they complete in the science classroom. Our challenge is having the materials to make this happen. We receive basic supplies yearly but for true instruction there are special tools my students need that go outside of our budget.
The students in my sixth grade class are driven individuals with creativity and ingenuity running through their veins.
When my students are given a project or we have special activities in class they go above and beyond the basic requirements. Our school is a wonderful district that allows for our basic educational needs. Unfortunately, many of our students arrive at school without basic necessities to allow their creativity and imagination to flow. Some supplies like colored pencils and markers are a luxury some of our children do not have the ability to purchase. It seems over the years our need is increasing as each new school year begins. It is my duty to assure all of my students are on a level playing field. Each child deserves the appropriate supplies to actively participate in class.
My Project
Each day in science class, we work using what most would consider standard educational items. In our class we have been moving more towards project based learning, where students have the opportunity to express their knowledge through a project as opposed to a written paper or formal test. In order to learn our scientific concepts, we require appropriate resources, such as colored paper, colored pencils, glue, scissors, and other materials used in the creative process. We also use white boards often for interactive learning and differentiated instruction. My students are actively engaged when they are asked to answer a variety of questions or take a survey using the interactive whiteboards and markers. Even with the most careful students the materials do show the signs of wear from being handled by hundreds of students year after year. I want to share in their enthusiasm by having the ability to provide all the tools they need to complete the tasks they are assigned.
This project will make it clear to all students that whether they come from an environment with an economical advantage or disadvantage it will not affect their ability to participate in the science classroom.
My classroom is a safe and caring place where the children feel welcomed and assured they will be treated with equal educational materials and expectations. This project gives all students the essential materials they need for a strong learning environment.
