I work in a Title I school, with a very diverse student population. While my first graders have varying backgrounds, they also have so much in common! They are sensitive, loving, eager, creative, and extremely active. It works out so well, because I am equally active! We love to dance, sing, play games, and root for our fellow UVA Hoos! We make learning fun, but every child varies in their preferred way of learning.
There is a growing need to focus on social-emotional learning.
As a teacher, I believe it is my job to help develop self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that are vital for school, work, and life success. Many students have difficulties sitting still and focusing for extended periods of time, which often leads to behavioral issues or distractions for those around them. Knowing this happens at this age, it is extremely important to build a strong, positive classroom community to allow students to find ways that help them to feel successful. These kiddos have to learn to read, write, figure out emotions, focus, among many other expectations at such a young age - they are truly an inspiration.
My Project
The materials and supplies that I am requesting align to Social-Emotional Learning. In order for a student to thrive in their classroom and life, they must understand their emotions and have the skills needed to manage those emotions. Academic learning first begins with Social-Emotional Learning.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student self-awareness and self-control, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
Students will be able to utilize the manipulatives and books in our classroom to hold themselves accountable for their own learning. They will be taught the skills and tools needed to be successful learners and friends.
