Nature Hikes & Adventure Sacks

My students need binoculars, magnifying glasses, nature guides, a mini tablet, and a 360 degree camera. These items will help them learn about our world while they hike around school.

My Students

Our free and reduced lunch has doubled since 2000. It is now at 74%. Poor nutrition and poor health often go hand-in-hand with poverty. I've also noticed many of our students do not have strong core muscles and they do better when they move.

Childhood obesity has rapidly increased in the last two decades.

Our state has the 11th highest rate of obesity in the nation. Our county’s childhood obesity rate is the third highest in the state.

We strive to teach healthful living to our students. The kids love having lessons outside. We were the first school in the state to be earn a Zone Health Award from NC Prevention Partners. We have a Fitness Club and our PE teacher is starting a Running Club this year. Our school offers free breakfast for all children each day and a fresh fruit or vegetable snack three times a week. Additionally we have a school garden and the produce goes to our students. We have a full-time school nurse and a visiting dental program. Yet we can still do more to help our students develop lifelong habits of physical activity and wellness.

My Project

One of our students came up with the idea for Adventure Sacks. Kids will be so excited to hike around campus when these for nature hikes! Each sack will contain a set of binoculars, a magnifying glass, a clipboard, and a set of nature guides. They will work in groups while studying the flora and fauna as part of their lessons. They will use the mini tablet to take photos and videos of the plants and animals they see. The apps will help them identify birds and other species. There is a Science Journal app that can help them record data. They will then create videos and informational cards so others will go on nature walks. These videos and cards will also include health tips, ways to take care of the environment, and the benefits of eating the vegetables in our garden. The community uses our playground and ball fields and we can post the videos and information on our facebook page, too.

Nature hikes are a great way to get kids an extra thirty minutes of physical activity each day!

They do get thirty minutes of recess, but that is not enough! Our school campus includes six acres of fields, trees, and even a small creek on the back part of the campus. Currently none of our classes walk that far back. Our students will use the Ricoh Theta to take 360 degree pictures while they are on their nature hikes or on field trips to places like our local state park. We will post these photos online so that other teachers and students will become interested in nature hikes. With this equipment, teachers will be able to tie these hikes into their curriculum and get kids moving! Kids will even ask their families to go on hikes.
