My students have been working on a very successful and publicized environmental project for the past three years; our state senator came to the ribbon cutting ceremony. Each year my students think of ways to improve green space surrounding their school. They have worked with several community experts constructing an outdoor classroom, nature trail, adding native plants to a riparian buffer around our pond, building bluebird houses, and a boardwalk into the wetlands for observations. Several of the teachers at our school have been able to use these facilities and have confirmed that the students are performing better in their studies because of the experience they are having in the outdoor environment. The problem we are having now is that a construction company is building several condos next to our nature trail. My students have been researching the zoning ordinance trying to determine if these builders have encroached on our school property easement. The builders have improperly cleared their land and my students' letters have helped the zoning commission hold them accountable for replacing trees that should not have been removed. Our next task is to determine exactly where our lot line is and how to measure the area that has been cleared. Our research indicated that the builders should have left a 25 foot buffer of green space. My students would like to purchase a GPS unit that would allow them to identify exactly where our lot line is and compare it to the building plans. This GPS would also be used to identify coordinates along our nature trail and inform the students, teachers, and community where our kiosks are located in the nature trail. We would be able to use this GPS in simulated activities where students try to find buried treasures hidden on the football field. All of these activities would coordinate with my educational standards for Marine Science, Environmental Science, and my new class Research (120 students in all). If it were possible to get a class set of GPS equipment then we could challenge other students in different disciplines and members of the community to join us in scientific investigations . I am a National Board Certified Teacher who is always looking for ways to improve students' active participation in their learning experiences. Our school is in an urban setting and has 41% of its 2,300 students on free and reduced lunch program.
