My marine biology students have transformed a pond located on campus into a hospitable outdoor environment. Organizations have supported the students in creating an outdoor classroom, wetlands boardwalk, and a nature trail. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provided the Water Wildcats with a sampling platform for the pond. My class has an ongoing partnership with NOAA and the phytoplankton monitoring system. In addition, I participated in a workshop where I was able to bring the know-how of building underwater robots back to my classroom. Students enthusiastically built four submersible robots for underwater data collection and research. My students have expressed an interest in preserving water quality in the pond and creating a fish habitat. Unfortunately, lab fees alone will not fund the scientific equipment that would enable students to do more in-depth data collection, which in-turn would empower them to help diagnose our ponds and the ponds in our watershed community.
