In our kindergarten classroom, we are currently working on planning and setting up our outdoor classroom space for our grade level to use! Students and I have recently been exploring outdoor math activities and are excited to further our outdoor learning experience. We are adding in additional activities and elements to help us expand our outdoor learning!
My students and I are eager to create this space and to provide a wide variety of tools and materials for further exploration!
This project will provide our outdoor learning space with materials to engage students in studying and observing birds and insects. Such materials include binoculars, magnifying glasses, journals and wooden houses for bugs and birds. Students will help to place the bug hotels and bird houses in our outdoor learning space and we will visit throughout the seasons.
During our visits, students will observe and record their findings in their outdoor journals. Students will work together to explore different animals and their characteristics. They will draw illustrations of the animals they have found, as well as work on literacy skills by labeling the various parts of their drawings and writing sentences sharing what they discovered during exploration. Students will create simple graphs within their journals as they record the number of insects they find and chart the different birds observed over time.
These resources will allow my young learners to engage in a variety of tasks while outside!
