Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school population is predominantly Hispanic. The student majority come from Spanish-speaking homes. We also have some students who speak other languages, such as Russian, Ukrainian, Tagalog, etc. Some of these languages are difficult to support. Accessing native language support is generally a financial challenge. Budget constraints and limited funding prevents us from supporting students in their native language, specially in languages other than Spanish.
In the last two years, our English Learners have made great strides in achieving their academic goals as well as acquiring English language proficiency.
Yet, there is much work to be done. Students deserve quality education and resources that support growth and achievement. Proficiency in another language should not be an impediment for a student's ability to succeed; instead, it should be a solid foundation to provide opportunities to achieve proficiency in their native language as well as English.
My Project
The requested resources will allow students to be more proficient in their native language, which will provide a solid foundation that supports second language acquisition and development. It is expected that this support will also promote and facilitate proficiency in the English language as well.
Reading selections in students' native language expands their knowledge on a variety of topics and supports the content and skills in each of their grade levels.
Students from Pre-K to 8th grade will benefit from a variety of reading selections that support and strengthen academic achievement as well as language acquisition. Newcomer students are in great need of these resources and supports.
