My Project

In Environmental Science class, we study the importance of genetic diversity and biodiversity in our ecosystem dynamics unit. During this time, we study the theories of Charles Darwin and the observations that different bird beaks adapted to different environments promoted genetic diversity through natural selection over time. During this unit, I relate the theories of evolution and natural selection to the importance of genetic diversity in humans and how different cultures and knowledge have adapted over time.

Diversity in biological genetics, agricultural science, and ecosystem dynamics is just as important as diversity in cultures and experiences.

Through sharing these diversities, evolution can occur. Therefore, it is important that students can tie scientific theory to everyday experience. This unit in particular is special in that it allows students to see how monumentally important respecting both biodiversity and diversity are to ecological and societal well-being. Students are learning that attracting more biodiversity to the school promotes genetic diversity even in our urban environment.

Supporting this project will help students identify important species of birds so that we can promote genetic diversity and a flourishing, biodiverse natural environment. This is an opportunity for students to express themselves and nurture their creativity - to boost their serotonin through outdoor expression of diversity and inclusion.
