My Students

We are a Title I school where breakfast and lunch are complimentary for every student. My students come from diverse backgrounds. Some students live with extended family members, single-parent families, and travel 20-45 minutes one way to get to school. My students are amazingly resilient, and I’m fortunate to be their teacher!

My Project

Thanks to Donors Choose, my last project to get books for my Native American Studies class was a success! I'm back again to make another request for this class. Often in teaching, we find ourselves constantly trying to keep pace and then running out of time in the end. This was not the case this semester! In Native American Studies, we finished our final unit a week before the end of the semester. I asked my students what they wanted to learn for our last week together, and they chose to learn how to bead!

We have done several projects in this class that my students and I have enjoyed, but only a few of them have compared to the excitement and perseverance my students have shown with this project!

This is why this project is vital for my current and future students. I want to implement beading and its history into my Native Studies curriculum for the remainder of this year and into the future.

Beading using cardboard looms was complex because, in the beginning, it was a struggle to get our beads to lay correctly. Then as we continued, the cardboard would lose its shape, start to bend, and our strings would lose tension. We also learned the hard way that beading needles are essential to our project since steady hands can be too big for our beads. Our lack of actual beading materials didn't lessen my students' enthusiasm, and they created some beautiful bracelets!

This project will allow my students to learn more about Native American culture and provide adequate supplies. These supplies will allow my students to learn to bead more items: lanyards, hatbands, different sizes bracelets, hair clips, and more!
