My students need to read books that are interesting but that also help them learn not only words but feelings. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas will help my students learn empathy at the same time learning history.
My students are all Native Americans living on an Indian Reservation where the unemployment rate is more than three times the state average.
Nearly all of my students live in non-traditional homes. The vast majority of my students do not live with a mother and father and many times they do not live with either but with a grandparent or aunt or uncle. Live is difficult for my students. Most of my students know more people who have gone to jail than who have graduated from college. They need to be inspired to overcome difficult circumstances and any book or learning than can teach my students how to overcome their situation and to feel empathy for others will impact their lives.
My Project
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is an outstanding book and my students are right at the age where this story can be both entertaining and life changing. My students have very difficult lives and knowing what experiences others have endured or in this case not endured helps them to see that there is hope for them. Life is a gift and they can succeed. My students need to be inspired and this book will help them be inspired.
My students live in very trying circumstances and they need to know that there are people who care and that one person can make a difference.
My students must recognize that they can be the change in their families and on their reservation. They need to learn compassion, empathy and develop a drive to succeed. I believe that this project will help get them started on that path.
