Native American Perspectives and Immigrant Journeys
My students need books that reflect cultural diversity and immigrant experiences. These texts will be part of our novel studies about reasons groups of people immigrate to America and our country's relationship with Native Americans.
Our school is home to a diverse community of learners, representing many cultural backgrounds. More than three-quarters of the students are from low-income families and rely on the school to provide the necessary tools for success.
Our fourth graders are eager learners who love books; however, not all students consistently have access to books and technology at home.
As teachers, it is our goal to ensure that our fourth graders have the tools necessary to become engaged readers, fluent writers, and great thinkers.
They are a great group of kids who deserve to have all of the resources they need to succeed.
My Project
There is nothing better than the excitement of opening a brand new book. I want to expose students to texts that reflect the immigrant experiences as well as the native experiences. We will explore the reasons individuals may choose to leave their home countries as well as the reasons why Native Americans were forced from their lands.
I want my students to gain perspective when reading about these important experiences and to realize the impact of the distinctive contributions that immigrant groups as well as Native Americans (Cherokees) have made upon American culture.
I want my students to see themselves in the texts they read and to be able to connect and empathize with the experiences of others.
This is especially true for the Cherokee Native Americans.
All of this would not be possible without these books including titles such as Only The Names Remain and Journey to America. These books will not only benefit students who are in my class this year, but will continue to have a lasting impact in the years to come. Please support me in making this learning a success!
