Native American Literature Initiative

My students need 26 Native American literature titles.

My Students

Our class—of the 20 smartest readers, writers and mathematicians on the planet!—is working hard in Mission, South Dakota on the Rosebud Indian Reservation to reach our potential and exceed the world’s expectations. I can already see the hunger for books about Native American culture in our class.

I can already see the hunger for books about Native American culture in our class.

I borrowed and read The Lakota Way by Joseph Marshall III, a writer right from Rosebud Reservation, to my class. Never were my students as enraptured as when I’m reading that book, never as many hands shaking in the air with personal connections, never as engaged in discussion as right afterwords, never as many comments like, “Ms. S, you know the ‘Bravery’ chapter we just read,” days later. Although I don’t like to use theft as a measure of interest, the book was stolen. So I borrowed another copy, read the chapter called “Honesty” and it was returned. But my students shouldn't have to steal books or fight over the one copy of the one book that they all love. Our town doesn’t have a public library and most of my students don’t have books at home. My students must have access to a classroom library full of books that interest them, books of all reading levels and in all genres.

My Project

Native American literature, non-fiction and fiction, poetry and memoir! Many books for children and young adults! Some from Lakota culture! Many from other Native American cultures! With characters and stories they can relate to—books they are hungry for!

Right now we have a classroom library and 4 classroom librarians (who applied for the position and put together this list of recommended books), but not enough books about Native American culture past and present to satisfy their hunger.

We have Johnny Appleseed, which represents Native Americans with a side character named Little Chief, a couple awesome Paul Goble books and some non-fiction books about different nations in the Southwest. But not enough! We need these books to help jumpstart
