Native American Basketry

My Project

During our most recent professional development, artists from the Indian Education Department from our State agency provided all Public School art teachers with a wonderful workshop discussing Native American Art. Specifically, how can we teach Native American basket weaving and Native American beading to our students.

I would like to introduce a Native American basket weaving unit to my middle school art students in grades 7th and 8th.

The funding would allow us the ability to purchase basket weaving materials, such as number 2 round reed, in order for my students to create a hand woven basket in the Native American style.

Teaching Native American Studies is part of the fabric of our Public Schools and our State's Educational Standards.

I teach STEAM based art education to my middle school students. They are encouraged to take creative risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, and work through the creative process which removes limitations and replaces them with wonder, critique, inquiry, and innovation.

During the pandemic, my art program was condensed to copy paper or lined paper and a standard #2 pencils because my students could not afford any art supplies or art materials for at home learning. As we slowly emerge from the pandemic, the simple fact of my students knowing that they are receiving higher level art supplies and that knowing they have received something special helps raise their self-efficacy.

Moreover, enriching our students’ lives with more technical and cultural experiences provides greater knowledge and empowers them to implement various techniques to satisfy their artistic expression.
