Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As students enter the room each day, they touch a poster and say, "Knowledge is power!" This starts their day off with a bang and a purpose for learning.
My amazing students are bubbly, excited, eager kids who are ready to learn and love to do things with their hands.
Our school is a tight-knit community where teachers and staff gather to support students and provide them with a quality bilingual education. Our school is Title I, and all students receive free lunch. This project would be a great opportunity for these students to be exposed to something they might not see otherwise.
My Project
Students will be creating three cultural crafts through this project. The first is a dream catcher, which students will create with imitation hide string, a metal loop, beads, feathers, and string. The second is a Kachina doll, which students will create with black construction paper, white chalk and oil pastels. The third is a totem pole, which students will create in groups out of construction paper. They will adorn the 1st and 2nd grade hallway for all to see. All of these items will be placed in the display case at our school to showcase student creative talent.
Students will be able to create dynamic, multicultural projects relating to an important part of American history. Using their creative skills, students will create a tangible reminder of the foundations and rich culture of our First Nations. Students will have the opportunity to use their hands to make something that will not only look nice, but will also hold cultural significance for many people.
Students' lives will be enriched by doing this project in many ways.
First, they will have the opportunity to learn about a group of people that helped form our country as it is today. Second, they will expand their knowledge of cultures and art by creating authentic artifacts which are relevant to today's America and yesterday's America.
