My Project

My students are a diverse group of third through fifth grade students at a Title One elementary school. We are starting a Name That Book program at our school and we need multiple copies of the books for it to be successful. For a competition to be fair, every student must have equal access to the reading materials. We cannot rely on students purchasing these books or finding them at public libraries. Funding this grant ensures that regardless of socioeconomic status, every participant has immediate access to the program materials.

Turning reading into a "team sport" completely changes the dynamic for students who struggle with or dislike reading.

The social aspect and the thrill of competition motivate reluctant readers to pick up books they might otherwise avoid. Graphic novels and high-interest titles serve as an entry point, building their reading stamina and confidence. Students practice communication, compromise, collective responsibility, and sportsmanship. It creates a sense of belonging and school pride.

By funding these books, you are not just purchasing paper and ink; you are investing in a proven literacy framework that transforms reading from an isolated academic task into a collaborative, high-energy community celebration that boosts achievement and empathy simultaneously.
