Namaste Out Of Conflict: Positive Coping Behaviors

My students need various yoga related items such as Yoga Mats, the Jade Yoga Balsa Superlight Yoga Blocks, the Merrithew Yoga Mini Foam Stability Balls and a Yoga Ball Chair.

My Students

I have the privilege of serving an outstanding group of elementary school students from ethnically diverse backgrounds. Although located in a formerly affluent community in the suburbs of Atlanta, our school is a Title I institution. My school provides instruction to a population of students where about 95% come from low socioeconomic circumstances. With that in mind, the bulk of my students receive free or reduced lunch as well as income adjusted tuition for our after school program.

My students are immensely intelligent and talented, however they do not always get the opportunities to amplify these attributes due to financial constraints and limited resources.

I can only imagine the things that my students would be capable of, if it were not for the adverse socioeconomic circumstances that they deal with on a daily basis!

My Project

As a blossoming yoga participant, I have learned some of the most simple ways to assist myself and others with calming techniques. Just as adults do, children encounter negative stimuli and adverse circumstances that sometimes cause them to respond negatively and/or take on angry temperaments. However, I am certain that with the knowledge and implementation of yoga rhetoric and techniques, their ability to face adversity more efficiently will improve.

Being that many factors affect my students' temperaments and behaviors, addressing their calming and coping skills via yoga techniques would be a simple, yet effective way to get them to exhibit more self-control without always resorting to acting-out behaviors.

It is also a more fun and unique way to convey the typical counseling interventions that are common when addressing anger and behavioral issues in the classroom. Resolving some of the behavioral issues within the classroom tied to anger and stress would help alleviate distractions and ultimately improve academic performance. The items requested to help fulfill the project are all basic items used in novice/intermediate yoga practice, including the Gaiam 5mm Yoga Mats, the Jade Yoga Balsa Superlight Yoga Blocks, and the Merrithew Yoga Mini Foam Stability Balls. During each session of "Namaste Out of Conflict", students will have access to these items while being educated on various methods in which to respond more appropriately to anger and stress. Students who participate in "Namaste Out of Conflict" will also acquire coping and calming skills that can be easily applied to both the classroom and any settings outside of the classroom.
