PRALC helps students ages 15-21 who may be experiencing hardships but who are working to obtain a high school diploma. Our students are teen parents, teens living on their own, or teens who are dealing with life issues that prevent them from succeeding in the regular high school setting. Our students often have had significant trauma in their lives and struggle with mainstream approaches to education.
Our students rock!, but our high school struggles with an 80% graduation rate, and the Alternative Learning Center became an all day program three years ago to meet the unique needs of our students.
My Project
My students come to school often from lives filled with trauma. A calm, supportive atmosphere is crucial to helping them separate from the chaos they know and to helping them be present and focused on their learning. This classroom will model a safe and healthy space for them.
My students deserve to have peace in their lives.
Lighting panels that mute the harsh glare of the fluorescent lighting we now have, will help create this peace. Table lamps will help to create a softer, warmer light in the classroom as well. Flexible seating will allow choice and comfort. A relaxing water feature will add a calming element so students can remain mindful and focused as they learn.
