Mythology: An Ancient Gateway to a Love of Reading

Help me give my students a dive into the myths that resonate throughout time. These classics will help teach themes, character arcs, and motifs seen throughout modern day texts and bring their love of reading to new heights.

My Students

My English students are always interested in the stories I put before them. But too often, our stories deal with real world concepts that they lack connections to and thus lose interest. To help boost the magic of reading, I want to introduce them to stories that can inspire anyone.

As a school, we work to improve literacy but without passion for the content, students struggle and shut down: turning reading into a chore rather than a delight.

Unfortunately, like many classrooms across the country, we have run into a roadblock of providing new texts that have multiple connections to a diverse group of students. No matter their background, students immediately connect to a hero facing a mythical beast or fighting against insurmountable odds. By incorporating these myths into my classroom, I know that students will fall in love with reading again and become life long readers. With that, we create a stronger world in the future full of curious, inspired minds.

My Project

Reading has unfortunately lost its shine with my high school students in both English and Latin. In class, we read many high level texts but the fun is lost on my younger students. They crave adventure and lore, and what better way to reignite their love of reading then the stories that span generations.

Send them back in time to the stories that cultivated a glorious era which serves as a basis for many of our stories today.

Understanding themes, exploring characterization, and analyzing poetic style will be that much easier to incorporate when they have stories that intrigue and excite.

Help my students love reading again in the same way many of us learned: through the mythology that echoes across time.
