Our classroom is a place of challenge and discovery! We live in one of the most impoverished counties in California which has been further impacted by multiple wildfires over the past four years. However hazy and ash filled our skies might become, our dreams and determination to achieve a brighter future are undimmed.
While our little town is both friendly and remarkably beautiful, many families struggle financially.
At our very small, rural, Title I school, all of our students participate in both the free lunch and free breakfast programs. We also offer a reduced cost after school enrichment program. The wonderful first to fifth grade students who visit my reading intervention classroom work diligently to sharpen their reading and writing skills. They eagerly strive to move forward in their academic careers.
My Project
Nothing motivates my students to read more than enriching the text with hands-on STEM experiments! Suddenly, everything they have read about comes to life before their eyes and cries of discovery echo throughout the classroom at the "aha-moments" arrive.
First, students will read Natalie Rosinky's Magnets: Pulling Together, Pushing Apart then use magnetic film to literally see the magnetic fields which different shapes and strengths of magnets create.
Next, the students will engage in open ended experiments with magnet putty and levitating magnets. Finally, students will use Google Slides to produce reports on what they have learned and how to duplicate their experiments. These reports will be shared with classmates in their regular classrooms during an end of study unit celebration. Hearing compliments (and a few murmurs of jealousy) from their regular education classmates lifts my students self-confidence and motivates them to take on yet more challenges in the intervention classroom.
Let's work together to offer these deserving students the STEM enrichment they rarely find outside the school setting. With your help, we can increase both their reading skills and their understanding of STEM principals and concepts. Thank you for allowing my students to feel cared for and respected by wonderful adults.
